Coalition for Community Leadership in Education

Community leadership for community schools

 Our Demands

  • Publish the rubric upon which the charter applications are evaluated with assigned weights for each category.

  • Establish and fund a technical assistance program sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Education, Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools and New Schools for New Orleans that provides resources and technical assistance to support community groups' ability to develop competitive charter applications.
  • Consistently apply the standards in the state's charter application process.
  • Develop a formal appeals process allowing applicants the opportunity to respond to concerns identified in their applications.
  • However, the concerns of the Coalition extend beyond changes to the charter application process to addressing the harm done to communities and children caused by the deficiencies of the previous process.

Who We Are

The Coalition for Community Leadership in Education, a consortium of community advocates, public school alumni groups, educators, parents and professionals, represent a growing number of concerned residents of New Orleans desiring greater community control of New Orleans' public schools.

Our Concerns

  • The BESE/NACSA charter application is flawed and highly subjective;
  • All new local groups applying for charters were uniformly and unfairly denied charters;
  • The charter application process disadvantages community groups;
  • There is no formal appeals process to allow groups to respond to concerns regarding their applications;
  • The charter application process is neither consistent nor transparent.
